A New Push to Legalize Marijuana Begins in New Mexico

New Mexico lawmakers are discussing a new bill to legalize recreational marijuana. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham created a task force to work on a good approach to legalizing recreational marijuana in the state. Representative Javier Martinez is on that panel and is hopeful that 2020 will be New Mexico’s year.

The task force is composed of medical professionals, politicians and law enforcement officials, ABQ Journal reported. A bill is being pre-filed by Martinez with several recommendations made by the task force. New Mexico would create a private industry for recreational marijuana and would be regulated similarly to alcohol/liquor stores.

Rep. Martinez said, “This is different – this is about creating a well-regulated industry.  “I think if we wait too long we’re going to miss the opportunity to legalize recreational marijuana the right way.”

New Mexico came close to marijuana legalization in 2020, but with the new legislative session beginning on January 21, some lawmakers are ready to start these discussions and make it to the finish line this time around.
