Navajo Nation Council Is Considering New Mexico Hemp Pilot Program

Cannabis Dispensary

In conjunction with New Mexico State University, the Navajo Nation Council is considering a bill that would authorize the tribe and university to work together cultivating industrial hemp.

The university’s researchers would lease a plot of land from the tribe if adopted, Fronteras notes. Strict security and testing measures would be in place and all crops would have to test within the legal THC threshold of 0.3% or less.

The tribe could receive a generous amount of revenue by participating in the project. According to Delegate Mark Freeland, the government has been urging tribes to grow hemp in large amounts for combat fatigues.

A final decision hasn’t been made, but is expected in the coming days.
