Canada Has Postponed Marijuana Legalization Launch Date

Canada

Canadian recreational marijuana users will have to wait for at least an extra month before making legal recreational marijuana purchases. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s administration was assuring legalization was on track for July implementation, but that is no more.

A new timeline to pass the legislation in the Senate led Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor to announce on Thursday it won’t be ready for a July rollout, according to CNBC.

Taylor said that provincial and territorial governments require between 8 and 12 weeks after senate passage and royal assent to implement the system for recreational sales, which puts the new potential rollout in August or September.

Legalization implementation would make Canada the second country with recreational marijuana legalization. Uruguay legalized in 2017.

Each province in Canada is compiling its own rules for recreational marijuana use and sales.
