Survey: More Americans Find Marijuana to Be Safe

America Marijuana Use

As more states legalize and decriminalize marijuana for medical and recreational purposes, a newly released survey has revealed that there is also an increased acceptance of marijuana in the U.S. The study also found that fewer people now believe marijuana to be a dangerous substance and that marijuana use in America has increased.

The survey included responses from more than 500,000 U.S. adults over the course of 12 years, according to The New York Times. In 2014, one third of surveyed U.S. adults thought weekly marijuana use was dangerous, which is a decrease by half from the survey results 12 years prior.

Comparison statistics from 2002 through 2014:

  • 1 in 8 adults have used marijuana in the last 12 months
  • 4 million Americans use marijuana daily
  • Shifts in marijuana use acceptance started climbing in 2006
  • Marijuana use disorders like decreased memory, focus or withdrawal showed no increase
