New Mexico’s Medical Cannabis Program Being Replicated

By: New Mexico Medical Marijuana Dispensary DIrectory  |   Posted : Feb.07.13  |  In:  Featured News

New Mexico’s medical marijuana program, which is the strictest in the country, seems to set a good enough example to be replicated. It is believed that Massachusetts is basing its medical marijuana laws from New Mexico’s.

New Mexico lawmakers approved their medical marijuana program (aka New Mexico Medical Cannabis Program) in 2007. Sine then, there are about 11,000 qualified patients. Each patient can possess up to 6 ounces of medical marijuana.

There are more qualifying medical conditions in New Mexico than is expected to be available in Massachusetts, but it is expected that Massachusetts’ medical marijuana laws will be more lenient by allowing the doctors to use their own discretion when deciding who could benefit from medical marijuana. In other words, Massachusetts doctors will be responsible for telling their patients they recommend they try medical marijuana, just as if a doctor might tell someone with insomnia to try Ambien.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health in Boston is hard at work creating the medical marijuana laws that are supposed to be completed by May 1, 2013. Only time will tell what is in store for the medical marijuana industry in Massachusetts.
